How can I play Hikvision backup video files on my computer?

I have downloaded some footage from my Hikvision DVR but the video doesn't play on any of my video player applications. Is there special software required for playing the backups?

Hikvision backups use a proprietary codec so the best method for playing them is using the Hikvision VS player software which also allows several backup files to be viewed sequentially making it easier to analyse the footage when it's broken up into several files.
