Hikvision SSD Solid State Hard Drives & how they compare to HDD Hard Disk Drives

What are Solid State Hard Drives?

Solid-State Drives (SSDs) are data storage devices that use NAND-based flash memory to store and retrieve data. Unlike traditional hard disk drives (HDDs) that rely on spinning disks and magnetic heads, SSDs have no moving parts. This lack of mechanical components results in faster data access speeds, lower latency, and improved durability. SSDs use integrated circuits to store data, allowing for quicker read and write operations. This technology has become increasingly popular in consumer electronics and computing devices due to its speed, reliability, and energy efficiency. Solid-state drives are commonly used as primary storage in laptops, desktops, and servers, providing users with faster boot times, reduced application loading times, and overall enhanced system performance.

Why choose a Hikvision SSD for my CCTV installations?

HDD's have been the industry standard in surveillance systems for many year now, but they do have some major drawbacks. As discussed above, HDD's have small, fragile moving parts which are very prone to accidental damage. Almost every CCTV fitter or network installer will have experienced accidentally dropping a hard drive, even from a very short height, only for it to be rendered useless and needing to be replaced. In even more frustrating circumstances, the customer may decide to move the CCTV recorder and damage the HDD themselves without knowing it, resulting in expensive call outs and repairs.

The Hikvision Solid State Drive has no moving parts making them much more durable and less likely to need replacing, maximising efficiency on every job.

The disk inside the HDD spins very fast, around 7200 RPMs. This allows the data to be read very fast, but a bi-product of this is heat and sound. You can sometimes hear the disk whirring, and recorders often need some kind of heat dissipation, usually noisy fans, to prevent the recorder from overheating.

Solid State Drives run silently and use a lot less power than HDD's, so overheating is no longer an issue. This also makes them much more energy efficient and better for the environment.

Solid State Drives are much faster than HDD's too, and by quite a bit! When moving big files, HDDs can copy 30 to 150 MB per second (MB/s), while the Hikvision SSD perform the same action at speeds of 500 MB/s. In real world terms, this means an HDD could copy a 20GB movie in less than 10 seconds, where a conventional HDD would take at least 2 minutes.

As the Solid State Drive does not require a large rotating 'Platter' or any moving parts that are found on HDD's, they are available in much smaller sizes. When placed side-by-side with an HDD, a 1TB SSD is less than half the size, and considerable thinner, than the HDD counterpart.

In some newer CCTV recorders models, the Solid State Drive can install directly into the motherboard and do not require any cabling.

All this means the NVR or DVR can be much smaller than conventional recorders, allowing for quicker, easier and more discreet installations.

Hikvision have released a range of Compact Eco CCTV recorders with SSD's already built-in, which can be found here.
