Cable for PoE connections

Asked 8 months in Wired Network Infrastructure by Barrie | 1 Answer

I'm looking to wire a number of internal sockets back to a patch panel using standard Cat6 UTP cable which I have already purchased.  It's solid core 23 AWG internal cable.

I'm also looking to wire up a number of internal PoE devices and would like to know what sort of cable is best for these.  Is UTP okay or should I be using FTP for these and if so, could you recommend a suitable Cat6 cable please?

Hi Barrie.

Standard Cat 6 UTP should be fine for PoE and data applications. FTP can help prevent interference if there are high voltage cables nearby but otherwise it is probably unnecessary.

It is more important to be sure the cable isn't CCA (copper coated aluminium), especially for PoE applications as the quality is inferior and may cause issues with reliability.

If the cable is in a public building it should be LSZH or halogen free to comply with fire regulations although this isn't required in a domestic installation.
